While most of us have trouble defining what the subconscious mind is, we all recognize that we have one.

In hypnosis the terms subconscious mind, unconscious mind or inner mind all describe the same thing;  that part of our mind where our long term memories, our habits and our strongest emotions are stored.  The influence of our subconscious mind over our actions is often very subtle, but it is always very powerful.  This is the part of your mind that controls how you feel and act when you are not fully focused on your actions and feelings.

The subconscious mind is what causes people to reach for a cigarette when they feel bored, stressed or lonely.  It is the subconscious mind which makes us believe that a piece of cheesecake will really comfort us.  It is the same subconscious mind which leads us to believe that we can't succeed or are afraid to fly or don't deserve to win.  But just as the power of the subconscious mind can hold us back, it can also be directed to carry us forward.

There are four main avenues or ways in which information is entered into the subconscious mind.  The first is during the early childhood years, before the conscious mind is fully formed and functioning as a filter to the subconscious.  Second, during times of emotional or physical trauma, the conscious mind becomes overwhelmed by the events occurring and allows all information to enter into the subconscious mind.  Third, simply by repetition habits are entered into our inner minds: things such as driving, smoking and eating habits.  The fourth way is with hypnosis.  Hypnosis allows access to the subconscious mind.  It is this last method of entering information into the subconscious mind which allows us to change the patterns that exist inside us and thus change the way that we think, feel and act.
